Interior Decorating 101

ID1

Have you ever imagined yourself in a different career?  A dream job per se.

We all have, but do you know the best part?  No deadlines, no expectations, no meetings… you have all the fun without any of the responsibility.  Of course it’s a dream job.

It took a while to come to that realization but since I have there is a whole new freedom in exploring.  Especially when your dream job is right brained and you are so, so left.

Now if the 101 hasn’t tipped you off, you could describe my knowledge of interior decorating as, green, a fine chartreuse almost.  But to me, there’s nothing better than a blank slate.  It’s all about learning something new and there is only one way – up.

To begin our ID series, I thought I would impart the only thing I really know about interior decorating, which is also very commonly misunderstood and used interchangeably by many, that is the difference between what Interior Design and Interior Decorating is.  In my humble opinion (IMHO) is how any 101 should begin.

Interior Design is the art and science of understanding people’s behaviour to create functional spaces within a building to enhance one’s quality of life and individual culture.  Includes research and analysis and is likely to work alongside architects, follow building codes, specs, and ensure environmental sustainability and accessibility.

Interior Decorating is the furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things.  Interior designers may decorate, but decorators do not design.

Both are very intriguing careers but hearing myself read “furnishing or adorning of a space with fashionable or beautiful things” re-confirms decorating over design for me. Be sure to stay tuned as we start to unlock the many doors of ID.

“Don’t let what could be get in the way of what can be.   Just do it, on your own terms and in your own way.”  Who knows, check back in 5, 10, 20 years and see what I’m up to. I may still be blogging about ID or decorating your home.  That’s the beauty of it, you just never know until you try.

Next: Colour 101.
